Butterfly-Shaped Macular Dystrophy

Description

Pattern macular dystrophies are a group of autosomal dominant macular diseases characterized by various patterns of pigment deposits in the macula. Among these is the butterfly-shaped macular dystrophy

Comments

Fundus autofluorescence and FFA allow better visualization of the alteration pattern, even in the presence of vitreous opacities.

Indication

60-year-old male diagnosed with macular dystrophy with progressive decrease in visual acuity. The fundus examination showed vitreous opacities (asteroid hyalosis) in the right eye and bilateral macular RPE alterations. Fundus autofluorescence showed a characteristic linear pattern of butterfly-shaped dystrophy.
