Optic pit with macular serous detachment

Description

Papillary pit is a rare, usually unilateral, congenital abnormality of the optic disc that presents as a rounded, grayish temporal depression. Visual impairment is present in 25-75% of cases and is due to macular involvement in the form of serous detachments, retinoschisis, or RPE alteration.

Comments

The treatment of serous detachment associated with the optic pit remains controversial.

Indication

A 37-year-old male with long-term vision loss in the right eye. Retinography and optical coherence tomography (OCT) confirmed the diagnosis of macular serous detachment secondary to the optic pit.
