Proliferative diabetic retinopathy

Description

Proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) is the most advanced stage of diabetic retinopathy, characterized by the formation of new abnormal blood vessels in the retina, called neovessels. These neovessels are fragile and prone to bleeding, which can lead to vitreous hemorrhages and fibrous tissue formation. Without treatment, it can result in severe complications such as retinal detachments and blindness. Treatment options include laser photocoagulation, injection of anti-VEGF medications, and vitrectomy to manage advanced complications.

Comments

This patient was treated with laser photocoagulation due to the presence of significant areas of ischemia.

Indication

We present the case of a 79-year-old man who, due to suspicion of PDR, was referred to us for a complete study using wide-field fluorescein angiography.
