Retinography (Clarus 700, Zeiss): central macular atrophy patch accompanied by multiple patches of severe chorioretinal atrophy (with visualization of the sclera) and peripapillary staphyloma (A).
(Cirrus 5000-HD, Zeiss): loss of ELM and EZ at the foveal level with significant thinning of the choroid (B). Note the presence of a perforating scleral vessel at the temporal juxtapapillary level.
The fundus shows multiple patches of severe chorioretinal atrophy (with visualization of the sclera) and a peripapillary staphyloma (Curtin type III). Central macular atrophy can be seen, with disruption of the ELM and EZ on OCT.
Comments
Complete macular atrophy is the final stage of the atrophic component of myopic maculopathy (stage A4 of the ATN classification). It is associated with very low vision and, to date, there is no treatment for it.
