Dislocation of lens fragments into the vitreous

Ultra-wide field (UWF) retinography (Clarus 700, Zeiss): Macular drusen. Lens fragments in the inferior vitreous cavity. Attached retina.

Description

The dislocation of lens fragments into the vitreous is one of the most feared complications of cataract surgery. Lens remnants can trigger significant ocular inflammation, with macular edema, ocular hypertension, and corneal edema. Additionally, it increases the risk of retinal detachment.

Comments

Ultra-wide field imaging techniques allow for recording the presence of lens fragments in the vitreous and assessing the state of the retina.

Indication

An 86-year-old male with cataract associated with pseudoexfoliation, who presents with a capsular rupture and dislocation of cataract fragments into the vitreous during cataract surgery.
