AO: Tessellated background, more marked in the infero-nasal quadrants due to the possible presence of an elongated globe towards the infero-nasal or an infero-nasal staphyloma.

OD: Inclined macular plane secondary to elongation of the eyeball

OI: Inclined macular plane. The adhesion of the vitreous to the papilla can be observed.

Description

Increased visibility of the large choroidal vessels as a result of pigment loss and attenuation of the retinal pigment epithelium secondary to axial elongation, tissue stretching, and retinal and choroidal thinning. It is one of the earliest and preliminary signs of high myopia and corresponds to category 1 of atrophic myopic maculopathy in the ATN classification. The tessellated background alone has not been associated with loss of visual acuity.

Indication

32-year-old female with severe myopia and asymptomatic vision. Corrected vision of 0.9 in the right eye (OD) and 1.00 in the left eye (LE). Axial lengths 28.43 mm OD and 28.41 mm LE. History of refractive surgery with ICL implantation for correction of her myopia (Pre-surgery spherical equivalent -8D OD and -7D LE).
